Alot of people are saying negative things about the article. What do you think?

For starters, I think it was a decent, proper interview instead of something stupid like his previous one he did for Revolver. I just wanted to find him and punch him in the face for that “inner acne” comment, jfc.

I can see where the negative comments come from, because his answers were totally ambiguous. He never properly answered the main question which was (obviously): where have you guys been? It’s so unusual for a band to completely drop off the radar like they accomplished last year.

Gas’s nerve damage in his arm is old news. While I don’t want an extensive medical history on him, it would be nice to know where he’s standing in his recovery. We were left with a “maybe in December” that they would still be heading into the studio, and it’s now February and from what I’m understanding, they haven’t gotten together to rehearse yet. However, it was nice that Ville shed some light on their Warner/Sire situation (even though the article said they were ‘dropped’, did anyone else get the impression that they could’ve just left under their own will? no idea. another ambiguous answer!).

The only thing I just don’t understand is why he wants there to be some “mystique” with their music. Unfortunately, this is the 21st century, where that kind of mystique isn’t appreciated by the masses anymore. It was appropriate maybe in the mid-1990s and further back, but nowadays, bands rely on various forms of media to get a larger fanbase. And he totally contradicted himself by saying “…we could get it back to being just about the music”. I’m sorry, but if you want things to be super successful for your band, that statement he made was…stupid?

If you remember correctly, he was so disappointed by how Screamworks was so “unsuccessful” that the tour was cut short. And perhaps, out of bitterness, that’s why he’s stayed away from everything for a year. Wanting to be successful is not a bad thing. Everyone wants to be successful in what they do — whether that’s being in a band, being a teacher, or being a race car driver. Realistically speaking, there’s hardly any type of profession out there that you do things “just to do it”. Of course it’s a passion, but you have sensitive to your own needs as well. In order to be successful as a band (which is definitely what he wants, no denying that, and there’s no shame in that), you’re going to have to be somewhat commercial. If people want to wear heartagram underwear, I say go for it. Being commercial, selling t-shirts, etc. doesn’t mean you’re selling out. But how do you expect to make a living if you’re not touring? If you’re not making your name internationally known (it is, but even at a larger scale, etc)? HIM is known, but they’re not really given a second thought, which is sad because they have so much potential and they’ve done a lot over the years they’ve been together. But you just cannot attempt to shut yourself out from society and refuse to use the technology that’s out there. Putting myself in his shoes, I’d actually be worried the bands’ standing. If he continues to chose not to really put HIM “out there”, and not market themselves (or have a proper agent to do it for them) the way they should properly be, they might be lucky if they gain a few fans over their next release. Maybe it’s not entirely the band’s fault, but who knows.

Honestly, for me it was nice to see something proper for once in a very, very long time. I guess since it’s Ville, though, there’s never going to be a straightforward answer. It’s a little bit frustrating, but it’s nice to know that things are going okay and perhaps we’ll hear from them in even more extensive ways later on down the year. :)
